Overall (3 of 5)

Our Lady of Sorrows has an absolutely beautiful church, and I enjoyed every bit of looking at its imposing structure next to the fish fry hall.  With plenty of signage and direction to the delicious fried cod, the fish fry had all the elements of a cozy little fish fry.  The fried cod patty was tender and flaky, and their weekly "special" is something to look forward to if cod is not your thing.  The sides were good, and the beverage table is not to be missed.  The beverage selection is good, but most of all the friendly staff and friends of the parish is what makes this fish fry great.  Thanks to everyone at Our Lady of Sorrows for putting on a great and enjoyable fish fry to everyone in our group!!

Fish and Main Dishes (3 of 5)

VARIETY:  Baked or Fried Cod, and Fried Shrimp.  Cheese pizza for the non-fish eaters and kids.  They also offer a “special” every week.  This week’s special was Pasta Primavera.  Next week is gourmet grilled cheese.
TASTE:  The fried cod fillet was soft and flaky for a fish patty.  Very good.  I didn’t try the fried shrimp.  The homemade pasta primavera was very good, with lots of chunks of peppers, onions, and other goodness.

VALUE:  $8.00 for a 2-piece dinner, and $6.00 for a 1-piece dinner.  $6 for a Shrimp dinners with 6 shrimp.  $6 for a “special” plate dinner.  Dinners include two sides, choice of bread, a dessert, and iced tea or coffee.  They were selling extra cod fillets for $4, shrimp (6) for $5, and baked cod (2) for $5.00.  Cheese pizza for $2.

CONDIMENTS:  Two types of tartar sauce, one included dill….a nice change up.  Ketchup and cocktail sauce in individual tubs.  They also had a bowl of shredded parmesan….nice touch!!

Side Dishes (2 of 5)

VARIETY:  Mac & Cheese, French Fries, Cole Slaw, Green Beans, Potato Salad, Hush Puppies, and Applesauce. 

TASTE:  The potato salad was homemade, it seemed, with a nice flavor.  The cole slaw was very good, as was the mac & cheese.  I didn’t taste the others

VALUE:  The portions were on the smaller side, I felt, compared to many other fish frys I had been to, and extra side portions are $1.25.

Beverages and Desserts (4 of 5)

BEVERAGES: Tea, and Coffee were complimentary with dinner.  $1.00 for Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite.  $2 for beers that included Bud Light and I think Budweiser.  Bottled Water was available for $1.00.
DESSERTS: The dessert table looked great.  They had a great variety of cupcakes, cookies, cakes, and other sweet treats.  They had plenty in the chocolate department, which always makes me happy.  Chocolate cake with chocolate icing, YES PLEASE!!

Atmosphere and Extras (4 of 5)

The people at Our Lady of Sorrows are certainly passionate about their events.  Everyone was so very nice, and they all seemed to be having a great time.  Ev and John Corich came over and said hello, along with a variety of the other staff.  I always love meeting great people at fish frys, and this one was at the top of that list! 
I didn’t see too much other stuff going on at this fish fry such as raffles, music, etc., but they did have big trays to carry your food along on, which was nice.  The plastic utensils were a little on the small side, which I found it tough to use with my giant hands, but I made it work.  I did like the 3-tiered rack they provided the utensils in.

Signage and Flow of Line (3 of 5)

With signs out on Kingshighway and along the way on Rhodes, there was no mistake which way to go.  Once you got inside, there was great signage as to the different stations along the way.  Beverages and Desserts were amply marked, and the flow clockwise around the room helped keep things moving.  I found that for the size of the line we waited in, it moved rather slow for its size.  That being said, it gave us much more time to talk to some of the nice people at the fish fry that much longer.

The fish fry at St. Mary Magdalen has a lot more to offer than its food menu.  While cod isn't on the menu, they have a delicious batter for its fried pollack and a selection of other fishes to eat.  The side dishes may not "wow" you, but they have toasted ravioli and crab rangoon to have if you so desire.  They compliment the food with a variety of music each week, and a special "favor" they offer each week ranging from green beer, to fortune cookies, to popcorn, to something different each week.  They also donate their proceeds to benefit one of their seminarians who is suffering an illness which I think is really great.  Great job to all at St. Mary Magdalen for going outside the box to make it an enjoyable fish fry for everyone.

Fish and Main Dishes (3 of 5)

VARIETY:  Baked or Fried Pollock, Jack Salmon, Catfish Nuggets, or Fried Shrimp.  No Cod.
TASTE:  I tried the fried pollack which had a tasty breading.  The breading was heavy, and the pieces were more like nuggets than a filet.  It was good.  The fried shrimp was about on par with the average fried shrimp.  It was good, but nothing earth shattering.  I didn’t try the other options they offered. 

VALUE:  $8.50 for an adult fish dinner plate, $7.50 for seniors, and $6.50 for a children’s plate, 12 and under.  Mac & Cheese or Spaghetti plates are $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for seniors, and $4.50 for children 12 and under.  All dinner plates come with bread, coleslaw, 2 sides, and 1 dessert.  $7 for just fish (2)

CONDIMENTS:  Tartar sauce in a giant bowl, ketchup squeezables, cocktail sauce pump, and a shaker of parmesan.

Side Dishes (4 of 5)

VARIETY:  Mac & Cheese, French Fries, Cole Slaw, Spaghetti, Green Beans, Hush Puppies.  They also offer  Toasted Raviolis, and Crab Rangoons  as a separate order.

TASTE:  The cole slaw was definitely homemade and had a very unique taste.  The green beans were tasty with some spices and onions added to the mix.  The spaghetti was good, made with a homemade sauce that you could smell outside as you walk past the hall.  The spaghetti was good.  Hush puppies were standard hush puppies that if you like hush puppies, then get them!  I’d recommend the spaghetti and the green beans, too.

VALUE:  Side portions were good-sized…not skimpy.  $0.75 for an extra side dish.  $1.50 for extra french fries.  Toasted Ravioli (6) and Crab Rangoons (6) are $4.00.

BEVERAGES: Tea, Water, and Coffee were complimentary with dinner.  Unless the tea was green tea, it was very weak.  Coke, Diet Coke, or Sprite was sold for $1.00.

DESSERTS: The dessret table looked great.  They had a great variety of cupcakes, cookies, cakes, and other sweet treats.  They were lacking in the chocolate department, but I only say that because of my love for chocolate sweets.  I tasted a spice cake with yellow icing sprinkled with chocolate.  Yummy!!

Atmosphere and Extras (5 of 5)

Since this was our first of two fish frys of the day, we beat the rush.  The atmosphere is livened up each week with music and favors they provide which vary from week to week.  See the photos for the complete 2014 schedule.  Some weeks include Irish music, German music, jazz, Italian music, Old Tyme & Dance, and the favors include THROWED ROLLS, green beer, popcorn, life savers, and more.  This week the music is Jazz with the Ukes, and the favor is fortune cookies.  There was a kind gentleman walking around from table to table handing out fortune cookies and adding to the fellowship and atmosphere of the evening.  Also, Dolored Guittar was livening up the atmosphere with her talented piano playing for everyone to enjoy during dinner.  This is something I absolutely love, so this fish fry gets super-high bonus points for this. Way to Go!! 
Along with live music, they are also collecting groceries and toiletries by donation to give to St. Vincent de Paul, which has facilities across Kingshighway from the church.  This is great.  If you go to St. Mary Magdalen’s fish fry on Kingshighway, bring some non-perishable groceries or toiletries and place them in the bins they provide.
I also met some very nice ladies selling 50/50 tickets and homemade artwork raffle tickets ($0.50 apiece for raffle tickets, so they are very affordable.)
Last but not least, I found out on the way out from the nice raffle ladies that all of the proceeds from the fish fry are going to benefit one of the seminarians associated with the church who is suffering from an illness.  This might have been the one thing that has touched my heart the most this fish fry season is to see so many people coming together to help someone they love so much.  St. Mary Magdalen, you should be an inspiration to organizations everywhere for what you do and how you pull together.

I had been to St. Mary Magdalen in high school with the jazz band playing in the gym, so I had an idea of where to go, however, you could pretty much follow your nose, and the people walking in.  There was signage out on Kingshighway, but not too much signage pointing you in the direction of which door to walk in.  After you get inside, there were plenty of signs pointing out where things were, and what they had to offer.  Flow was great, nothing too complicated.

St. James The Greater puts on a great fish fry.  From a well-decorated hall, to homemade side dishes, to some delicious fried shrimp and fried catfish, the menu pulls out all the stops.  I usually go for the cod, but you want to try the catfish or especially the shrimp at this fish fry.  Complement your fish with delicious homemade cole slaw or homemade clam chowder.  The pasta would be a great pick, too.  With plenty of beverages options included in your meal and a variety to purchase, you won't go thirsty after eating all that fish.  The cafeteria-style lunch trays are an added bonus instead of styrofoam plates or trays.  They have tiny tables for little children and had some raffles to enter as well.  Hopefully you know where you're going to get inside to the fish fry, otherwise it might take you a walk around the corner or building to find the correct door.  The staff was especially friendly and had a fun-loving attitude.  I would definitely go back to St. James the Greater for their fried shrimp, cole slaw, and clam chowder.  Great job!!

VARIETY:  Fried or Baked Cod, Fried Catfish, and Fried Shrimp.  Cheese Pizza or Grilled Cheese for the kids or non-fish eaters.

TASTE:  This fish fry is all about the fried catfish and fried shrimp.  The shrimip have no tails on them and are plump and delicious.  They might be the best fried shrimp I've had on the tour.  The catfish was very good, too.  The fried cod was a frozen patty and was had a thick, touch, crunchy breading shell.  it would be great on a sandwich.

VALUE:  $9 for a 2-piece cod dinner, $8 for seniors, and $7 for children 12 and under.  $10 for an adult shrimp dinner, $9 for seniors, and $8 for children 12 and under.  Extra fish is $5, shrimp $6, $3 for grilled cheese, or $2 for cheese pizza.  Each meal inclues french fries or hushpuppies, green beans, cole slaw, bread, a drink, and dessert.  Price seems average, to slightly above average for adults, but the senoir and children's plate seem a bit more expensive than most. 
CONDIMENTS:  The condiment table was great.  Convenient and had almost everything you needed.  Ketchup in big containers with little cups, tartar sauce packs, cocktail sauce in a big container, Tabasco, Frank's Red Hot, Parmesan Cheese shakers, butter, salt, pepper, but no malt vinegar or lemon.  Almost a perfect condiment table!!

Side Dishes (5 of 5)

VARIETY:  Cole Slab, Green Beans, French Fries, Pasta with White or Red Sauce, and CLAM CHOWDER!

TASTE:  DELICIOUS!!  I get the cole slaw at every single fish fry I visit, and this one topped them all.  I'm not sure what the secret ingredient is (could be balsamic vinegar), but its a must try.  The white sauce pasta was very good, too, as were the green beans.  Both were great and way above average.  The green beans were buttery and hot.  French fries are french fries, in my opinion, and I didn't get to taste the red sauce pasta. 

For the first time that I've seen, St. James had delicious clam chowder, and I'm not a big clam chowder fan.  Big chunk of potatoes and clam in a delicious soup.  Great job!

VALUE:  Extra sides are $3 each, which seems higher than most other fish frys for extra sides.

Beverages and Desserts (4 of 5)

BEVERAGES:  Tea, Lemonade, water, and coffee were complimentary with dinner.  They had someone selling beer and soda near the dessert table.  I believe it was $3 for beer and $1 for soda.  Beer choices included Bud, Bud Light, Busch while soda choices included Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite.

DESSERTS:  The dessert table contained mostly a variety of cakes.  I typically prefer more diverse of a selection, but dessert was good.  I was very full by the time I finished the sampler platter they provided me, but the chocolate cake was good.

Atmosphere and Extras (4 of 5)

The atmosphere at St. James was great.  We were ahead of the crowd, but on the heels of St. Patrick's  Day, and it was great seeing the decorated cafeteria during dinner.  The staff was extra friendly and high-spirited.  I loved the enthusiasm of all of them.  I also really liked the itsy bitsy tiny tables for the smaller children.  That was a first.  Before you got to the cafeteria, they were selling raffle tickets for a tool set.  I always like to see something extra going on. 

My favorite extra was the lunch trays they served the food on instead of paper or styrofoam plates or trays.  This is the second fish fry I've been to that has used trays, and every time it is a real treat.

Another great extra was the clam chowder they had.  Its unusual to find soup or anything like it at a fish fry.  It was delicious on top of it all.  Great job!!

Signage and Flow of Line (2 of 5)

Signage and flow is the only thing about this fish fry that was a little confusing.  Since it was my first time there, it wasn't perfectly clear which door to enter to go into the fish fry.  Its not hard to find, there just weren't any signs outside.

Before you get into the cafeteria, someone was selling raffle tickets next to a bunch of menu signs, which immediately makes you think you are supposed to pay there, so, of course I tried to pay the person selling the tickets.  Not so.

Once you get inside, the room and signage are great, but the flow of the food line is a little unusual.  I tried paying the next table of people taking money, and I tried going in the out, except you are supposed to pay afterwards.  They had plenty of signs inside for condiments, beverages, desserts, etc., but getting through that line wasn't very intuitive.

St. Alban's fish fry is one that's not too close to where I live, so it was a little trek getting out there.  It was nice to see the fish fry fellowship out in Wildwood, too.  Signage getting into the fish fry was a little scarce, but pointed you where you needed to go once you got inside.  If you're looking for top notch cod, you might try another fish fry, but St. Alban's has plenty of sides and a lot of delicious and creative desserts to offer.  They also have a few menu items that most other fish frys do not offer, such as nachos, kettle corn, and hush puppies.  They are also selling cook books for those that know their way around the kitchen or for those who are looking for a great gift for someone. 

Fish and Main Dishes (2 of 5)

VARIETY:  Fried or Baked Cod and Pizza for the kids or non-fish eaters.  Not a whole lot of variety.

TASTE:  The cod seemed hand-breaded, but was a little chewy to me, which was a new sensation.  It looked delicious, but didn't taste quite as good as it looked.  I probably just got a couple touch pieces.

VALUE:  $9 for a 2-piece cod dinner, $7 for a 1-piece, or $6 for 2 slices of pizza.  Each meal inclues french fries or hushpuppies, green beans, cole slaw, bread, a drink, and dessert.
CONDIMENTS:  Tartar sauce, ketchup, cocktail sauce, and I can't remember if there were any others.  My photos seem to have been deleted somehow, somewhere.

Side Dishes (2 of 5)

VARIETY:  Hushpuppies, French Fries, Green Beans, and Cole Slaw

TASTE:  I was very excited for the hush puppies, however, they were out when I went through line.  Big disappointment.  I guess they are good!  The green beans are very oniony, which I liked.  The cole slaw was standard, as were the french fries.

VALUE:  Sides weren't listed per extra portion, but they do sell the Fries, Hush Puppies, and Cole Slaw in Bulk for $5, $5, and $2 (per pound?) respectively.

Beverages and Desserts (3 of 5)

BEVERAGES:  Water, Tea, Lemonade, Coffee, and Lemon-Lime Gatorade (I think).  The gatorade seemed to be made from powder and was a neon yellow color.  I'd stick with the tea, lemonade, water, or coffee.  They had draft beer on tap, and a selection of wines, which looked very good since I abstain from alcohol during Lent.  Unfortunately I don't have a price for beer or wine for you.  Probably in the $3 - $5 range.

DESSERTS:  The dessert table looked fabulous.  There were many options to choose from, but the item that stuck out for me were the ice cream cone cupcakes.  So clever, so cute, and I'm kicking myself for not having the photo of them that I took.  Great job on desserts!

Atmosphere and Extras (4 of 5)

The St. Alban's fish fry had the classic, crowded, noisy fish fry feel to it.  It was great.  everyone was friendly, and it seemed people were hanging around at their tables after they were finished eating to enjoy the fellowship of the fish fry, which is one key item that I believe must be present for a very successful fish fry.

They had Ladys Auxilliary cook books for sale for $20, which you could pay for with your meal when ordering.  They DO take credit cards, too.

The menu had a few bonus items that caught my eye, however, I didn't order any of them.  They offer nachos (Eat-in only), kettle corn, and pizza by the slice.  The nachos seemed to come in the plastic container in which the cheese bowl was built-in.

Signage and Flow of Line (4 of 5)

The church is easy to see from the road, however, if you've never been to this fish fry before, you might not know exactly where the fish fry is.  Not too many signs in the parking lot directing you to the correct door.  I found it OK, but the other Man of Cod, Aaron, went on a little adventure before finding the correct door.

Once you get inside and the fantastic smell of fried fish invites you in, you'll have no trouble knowing where all the stations, etc. are in the fish fry.  They had giant signs over the dessert table, beverages, etc.  Everything was easy to find.  Great signage inside.  You might consider adding a few outside, but that's just according to my friend. 

The line was long, but moved at a decent pace.  The other areas of the fish fry following along in suit so everyone just basically made a circle around the room.  It was well laid out once you paid and stood in line.

St. Clements of Rome is a fish fry I would return to for the quality of their main dishes.  They have the most diverse menu of fish I have seen at a fish fry.  The fried cod is one of the best I’ve tasted, and the baked cod is an excellent choice if you don’t do fried foods.  They had more side dish selections than most other fish fries, and many of them are different than most other fish frys.  I was a big fan of the full concession stand of beverages.  Tea/Lemonde/Water/Coffee is great, but having all those extra options, especially a soda fountain, was great to see.  The room is a little small for the popularity of the fish fry, but with the Athletic Association running a tight ship over there, the overall experience was very satisfying.  Great job St. Clements!  Keep hand-breading that cod, it was delicious!

Fish and Main Dishes  (5 of 5)

VARIETY:  Fried or Baked Cod, Mediterranean Crusted Baked Salmon Fillet (with sun dried tomatoes and pine nuts), Coconut and Mango Crusted Baked Salmon Fillet, and Fried Shrimp.  Cheese Pizza for the kids, or for the non-fish eaters.

TASTE:  The fried cod was top notch!  It was hand-breaded, and it was my favorite part of the meal.  I also had the baked cod, which is unusual, but it was the best baked cod I’ve had since we started this fish fry review adventure.  The other baked fishes looked good on the plates I saw, and it was well-received by the people I had dinner with.  The cheese pizza looked good, but looked like it had been delivered much earlier in the evening.
VALUE:  $9 for an adult plate which included 3 sides, bread, and tea/lemonade/water/coffee.  Not the cheapest meal on the tour, but well worth it for the cod alone.  $5 for a child’s plate, which includes choice of cheese pizza or cod, 2 sides, bread, and drink.  Extra salmon fillets are $3, extra baked or fried cod is $2, extra cheese pizza is $2, and 1 extra shrimp is $1.
CONDIMENTS:  Bulk pumps of ketchup, tartar, and cocktail sauce.  Much better than the individual packets.  Lemon wedges always add a nice touch, in my opinion.

Side Dishes  (3 of 5)

VARIETY:  Salad, French Fries, Applesauce, Creamy Coleslaw, Green Beans, Boiled red potatoes w/Parsley, and Mac & Cheese.
TASTE:  The boiled potatoes were delicious with the roasted peppers in there.  Mac & Cheese was good, as was the salad.  All the rest of the sides were good, too, but didn’t stand out the aformentioned.  My friend Tim (who is an adult) said that the kids’ food was delicious.  (He ordered pizza, applesauce, and macaroni, I think…haha)

VALUE:  Portion sizes were good…not too big, not too small.  They didn’t list how much extra sides cost.


Beverages and Desserts  (4 of 5)

BEVERAGES:  Tea, Pink Lemonade, water, and coffee were complimentary with dinner.  They had a full concession stand with a variety of Pepsi products, as well as a beer and wine selection.  Beers included Bud, Bud Light, Bud Select, as well as Michelob Ultra for $2, and a red or white wine selection for $3 per glass.  The concession stand had fountain soda, if you’re a fountain soda person like me. 

DESSERTS:  The dessert table looked very diverse and was hard to choose which one to pick.  I had my mind set on cookies so I went with that, but they had tons of other items that I look for at other fish frys.  The Knights of Columbus were accepting donations for desserts, so I’m not sure if they were included or if you were expected to make a donation, but their donation jars were not hurting for tips.  Great dessert table!

St. Clements had that quality parish grade school feel with the artwork on the walls, a view down the school hall, and cafeteria tables, picnic-style, that us tall folk have trouble getting in and out of.  I loved the atmosphere of this fish fry.  The staff looked great with their matching blue aprons.  Loved it!  Saw a lot of great friends there, the Hoovers, Nies, Smiths, Edmondses, Amy, Christina, and Dwayne, so the atmosphere was extra special.  Nothing extra at this fish fry such as raffles, music, etc., but the room isn’t really big enough to have much more than a fish fry in there.  One added extra that I haven’t seen at a fish fry yet was a freezer with ice cream treats in it.  I didn’t look inside too closely, but it looked like they had push-ups, drumsticks, ice cream, etc. inside.

Signage, Flow, and Line  (5 of 5)

You can definitely tell there was a fish fry at St. Clements if you drive past the church.  Plenty of signs pointing the way.  Inside, not as many signs, but the flow seems a bit obvious, except for the soda and beer, which is through the double doors and around the corner at the concession stand.  There was a line, but it moved quite well, so don’t be alarmed if the line seems long.  The line may be long, but the wait is not.

We were excited to kick off the fish fry season at Sacred Heart in Valley Park.  We have friends in that area, as well as friends in the faculty.  Everyone was very friendly, and we enjoyed meeting so many great people in that parish.  The Knights of Columbus in their matching red aprons definitely kept things moving, hot, and clean.  Beverage service at the tables was a nice touch, too.  The food is good, but I would recommend the fried cod as a sandwich.  The fried mac n cheese bites are new this year, and worth trying.  The layout seemed spacious so we must have beaten the rush since we didn’t wait in line.  Thanks to everyone for such great hospitality!

VARIETY:  Fried Cod, Baked Tilapia, and Fried Shrimp.

TASTE:  The fried cod patty was good, but I didn’t have a chance to taste the baked tilapia or the fried shrimp.  I felt the fried cod would be great as a fish sandwich.

VALUE:  $7 for a 1-piece adult plate ($5.50 for seniors) which includes fried cod or baked tilapia, 2 sides, choice of bread, tea/lemonade/coffee, and dessert.  It is a great value for the amount of food served.  $2 gets you an extra piece of their delicious fish.  A la carte fish is sold for $3 each, 2-piece shrimp for $1, and 1 piece of pizza for $3.

CONDIMENTS:  Squeezable bottles of ketchup and cocktail sauce, individual packets of tartar sauce, malt vinegar, parmesan cheese shaker, and lemon slices.

Side Dishes (2 of 5)

VARIETY:  Green Beans, French Fries, Pasta (Red Sauce), and Cole Slaw.
 The sides all tasted good.  I wouldn’t say they were too far out of the ordinary.  The cole slaw is vinegar-based, and I tried everything except for the french fries.  The green beans were a highlight for me with onions in them.

VALUE:  The portion sizes for the sides were generous.  Extra sides were $2.00 each.

BEVERAGES:  Tea, Lemonade, water, and coffee were complimentary with dinner.  They even had people serving drinks to the tables.  What great service!

DESSERTS:  Included with dinner, the desserts looked yummy.  Mostly cakes, so of course I had a piece of chocolate.  Not a wide variety of desserts, but the two I tasted definitely passes the taste test.  Extra desserts are $2 if you get a sweet tooth.

The room where the tables were set up was a nice, big room with high ceilings.  Great room for a fish fry.  Nothing much extra except for a raffle out in the lobby.  One added bonus was that Sacred Heart had some fried mac n cheese bites on their menu, which I had to order.  How can you go wrong with that?  Worth every nickel of the $2.50.  I was a big fan of the matching aprons the Knights of Columbus were wearing.

There were students towards the end of the Sacred Parking lot waving fish fry signs at the heavy rush hour traffic on Hwy 141 and the side streets.  There were plenty of signs to get you to the parking lot, but you had to follow your nose to the food.  Once you get inside you had to walk through the gym and around the corner.  Luckily I had someone (my sister) who teaches art at Sacred Heart with me to show me the way.  Otherwise it seemed around the corner and down the hall, etc.  There wasn’t much of a line.  The staff seemed to have it all put together, especially in those matching, monogrammed aprons.  Loved it!

St. Paul's fish fry was great.  The highlight for me was the delicious food they were serving.  With quality cod and homemade side dishes, you really get a sizable, tasty dinner for $9 or less.  Make sure to get the cole slaw with mac and cheese....or spaghetti.  You really can't steer wrong with the side dishes.  It was nice to be served beverages at the tables, and the clean up crew was on top of things, too.  St. Paul's is doing fish frys the way they are intended, with great food, great fellowship, and a community effort to make it all happen.  The extra time waiting in line only allowed us to talk and visit more with others.  This fish fry is a must, especially if you live in Fenton.

Fish and Main Dishes (4 of 5)

VARIETY:  Fried Cod, Baked Tilapia, Fried Catfish, and Fried Shrimp.  Cheese Pizza or Grilled Cheese for the kids.

TASTE:  The fried cod I tasted was very good.  Delicious, flaky cod.  Best so far this year!  The baked tilapia looked good but I didn't taste it.  It looked like it had a butter lemon sauce on it.  I didn’t taste the  fried shrimp.

VALUE:  $8.50 for an adult plate which includes choice of Fried Cod or Baked Tilapia, 2 sides, choice of bread, drink, and dessert.  $9.00 for a 6-piece fried shrimp including the same sides, etc.  3 extra shrimp for $2.75, and and extra piece of cod for $2.  Childrens meals at $4.50-$5.00 include cod, shrimp, tilapia, or friend shrimp, along with grilled cheese for $2.50 and cheese pizza  squares for $1.50.  
CONDIMENTS:  Individual packets of ketchup, tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese. 

Side Dishes (5 of 5)

VARIETY:  Cole Slaw, Mac and Cheese, Spaghetti, and French Fries.

TASTE:  All of the sides are homemade, according to one of the staff, except maybe the french fries.  The mac and cheese was delicious, and the spaghetti had a tangy, delicious sauce on it.  The coleslaw had the great, homemade taste to it.  The fries looked pretty standard.

VALUE:  Extra sides are $1.50, and the portions are very generous.

Beverages and Desserts  (3 of 5)

BEVERAGES:  Tea, lemonade, water, and coffee were complimentary with dinner and served to you at your table.  That was a nice touch, plus they had bigger cups than most.  I didn't see soda or beer anywhere. 

DESSERTS:  The dessert table had a lot of options, mostly cakes when we were there.  I had some sort of chocolate cake deliciousness.  Yum!

Atmosphere and Extras  (3 of 5)

St. Paul's has that classic fish fry feel.  Held in the school gym and the food line past the concession stand area, the place was decorated for St. Patrick's day and lined with the children's artwork, which is always nice to see.  A nice lady was  tending to a quilt raffle table in the line portion.  She had some handmade quilts they were raffling for $5.  Another lady was taking orders in line filling out the tickets to help keep things moving.  It looked like the well-behaved children, adults, and seniors alike were all having a great time.  It was good to see our friends Randy and Cheryl out getting their fish fryday fix, too.

Signage, Flow, and Line  (4 of 5)

If you can't find your way to the St. Paul's fish fry, you simply aren't paying attention once you get close.  Signs starting out on Highway 141 point the way to this Fenton fish fry all the way up to the parking lot.  Once you get inside, they had giant handwritten menus to see along the way to the food.   The line seemed really to go a lot slower than it seemed it should have, but the wait wasn't too bad.  The line flowed right around the outside of the gym in a logical fashion to wind up near the seating area.

Today is the last Friday in 2014 before Lent begins.  The next 7 Fridays are going to be a lot of fun seeing so many great folks around the area.  Last year was our inaugural year visiting different fish frys each week, and we are estatic to take the tour of at least 8 different fish frys this year.  God willing, we'll get to hit at least 10.  Last year we were able to visit 15!!  Make sure to send us suggestions of which fish frys to visit, along with sending us the details of your fish fry if you're not listed in our database for 2014.  Happy Friday!!

Who's ready for fish fry season?  I know I am.  After our inaugural year last year, I was about fished out, however, the crave for the cod always comes back.  I'm happy to keep this site and endeavor running, and we look to visit close to 10 new fish frys in 2014.

Our favorite part of the fish fry season is the comradery, so let us know where you're going to be and we will try to visit you.  We try to visit 2 each week since there are so many out there.  If we only did one per week, it would take years to hit them all.
