St. Michael the Archangel - 2/13/2013

by Nathan on February 16th, 2013

Overall  (2 of 5)

St. Michael the Archangel was our second stop on Ash Wednesday.  We decided to visit this one on Ash Wednesday since its the only day they have a Fish Fry.  They certainly had a crowd for the size of hall they were using.  The taste of the food was average.  The highlight of my meal was definitely the macaroni and cheese.  There's not too much else to highlight.  We ran into some friends, so it was good atmosphere to catch up while their children were occupied by some of the toys they had there.  Among all of the folks in attendance, we did see one of Shrewsbury's finest enjoying some fish.

Fish and Main Dishes (2 of 5)

VARIETY:  Fried Cod, Fried Tilapia, Fried Fantail Shrimp (6). Cheese Pizza for the kids. They eventually ran out of shrimp.  White or wheat bread.

TASTE:  I tried the cod and the tilapia. Each tasted ok, but a little over-fried. Tartar sauce helped.

VALUE:  $8 for Cod and Tilapia, $9 for Shrimp. Includes a choice of bread, 2 side dishes, coffee or lemonade, and a dessert.  Kid's meals included beverage dessert and the choices were $6 for a 9" cheese pizza, $3 for a half pizza, or $6 for Mac & Cheese.

CONDIMENTS:  All served in larger containers with ladels....Ketchup, Tartar, Hot Sauce, Cocktail Sauce, and PICKLES!!

Side Dishes  (2 of 5)

VARIETY:  Mostaccioli, Cole Slaw, Mac & Cheese, & Tossed Salad.

TASTE:  The Mac & Cheese was outstanding! It was extremely cheesy and tasted baked. The cole slaw was creamy, and tasted like standard tub cole slaw. The tossed salad was just that with the dressing already on it....tasted like French.  It was nothing special, but it tasted good.

VALUE:  Very generous portions of sides.  $2 for an extra side dish.

Beverages and Desserts (3 of 5)

BEVERAGES:  Coffee and lemonade were complimentary. Coke product cans for $1. Bud or Bud Light cans for 1$.

DESSERTS:  Standard homemade brownies, cookies, cupcakes, etc.

Atmosphere and Extras  (2 of 5)

Small school cafeteria, slighly crowded. The staff was friendly, but it seemed like they could have used a few more volunteers.  They had an area with some toys for the kids to play with and a playground outside the hall.

Signage, Flow, & Line  (3 of 5)

The gymnasium entrance that read "St. Michael's" was deceiving as the entrance to the fish fry.  Eventually you realized where to go in.  Once you found it, the flow was fine.  We were able to look at a menu while we waited to pay.  There was a small line after paying the cashier which moved a little slow for its size.   Each stop along the way (fish, sides, condiments, beverages, and desserts) followed in that order, which is logical and appreciated.
